Booker T Washington Booker T. Washington founded Tuskegee Normal School, later named Tuskegee Institute, and today known as Tuskegee University, on July 4, 1881, 16 years after the end of slavery, at the age of only 25 years old. At five-years old he was a slave, valued at only $400.00, yet he rose to become one of the greatest black leaders to have ever lived. He was an advisor to presidents McKinley, Roosevelt and Taft. His autobiography, Up from Slavery, was a bestseller. It was translated into more than 17 different languages, andhas never been out of print. He was the first black to be commemorated on a fifty-cent coin, and the first black to have a U.S. postage stamp named in his honor.
